My name is Dawn Mathisen and I live in Sunny Southwest Florida. I am a single mom to a great 7 year old son, a candle lover and a possibility thinker! I love owning my own home based gourmet candle business! I'm having fun, working with great people and enjoying both retail profits from Direct Sales as well as being a Network Marketing Mom. Me? Yes!

My story is not anything special and I'm sure you can see some of yourself in it in some way if you are looking at the possiblities of a home based business. I've always had big dreams and it has taken me years to find the way to make some of those dreams come true!

I love people and have had many good jobs in various fields. Those include Real Estate, Title Insurance, Travel Agency, Marketing, Customer Service in the Utilities Industry and most recently as a Helping Teacher with Pre-Kindergarten.

That seems like quite a resume doesn't it for a 40-something woman? Truth is, while I loved working with people and especially children, those jobs all were just a means to an end (paying the bills) and I searched for the "true fit" in my life. We all have to work at something and earn an income. But I was searching for something I LOVED, something that would be more than just a way to pay the bills but a way to realize my dreams.

While I worked in those varied fields, I dabbled many times at home based businesses both in Direct Sales and Network Marketing but again still never found the "true fit" for my life and lifestyle, something I loved doing that would be life-changing.

A lot of things in my life changed when I became a mother. I had my son at age 35 and consider him a true gift and blessing in my life! My career path took a big change at that point too trying to find a job that gave me as much time with him as I could have with still being able to pay the bills.

I "retired" from a Direct Sales company (a home party plan) in 2001 because I realized while I loved the extra income doing home parties was just not a possibility in my life anymore. I already was gone 9+ hours a day with my daytime job and the thought of leaving my son in the evening to do a home party when he was a baby no longer appealed to me. I liked this company's products but wasn't getting the results I had dreamed of when I joined.

When my son was two our lives were changed again when we discovered he had a speech delay and some sensory issues that required a lot of therapy. My schedule needed to change in order for this to happen and again some life changes were in order. Fortunately I was able to stay home with him for a little while to get him through this time. Again I started to think about home based employment. I sold on ebay for awhile which helped to make staying home a reality but still I wanted something more.

At age 3, Trevor began school in a Pre-K program that helped him with his speech and language. Today you would never know that he ever had a speech delay!

Shortly thereafter I got my Paraprofessional Certification and went to work for the school district as a Helping Teacher in the Head Start Program. I was excited that I would have the same hours as him, the same days off, summers etc. I thought it was a dream come true.

That excitement was short lived. The reality was I needed a part time job to make ends meet. So the very reason I went to work for the school district was undone by the need for additional income. Doing what I had to do, I continued to work a part time job but began again to research for the company that was going to be the "true fit" in my life. I was still looking for something more....

Everything I researched on the internet again led me back to Network Marketing or Direct Sales. I had not had great prior experiences in Network Marketing because I never really paired myself with the right company that I could get excited about the products and felt it was stable. Direct Sales entailed quotas, home parties and not such generous commissions sometimes.

Then the light went off - really I had two options. Stay stuck where I was or change my way of thinking. Open my mind and find the "true fit" opportunity for me and GO FOR IT! Put all the past experiences and pre-conceived notions out of my mind and be willing to take that chance for my family's future.

The companies I looked at that offered the best Residual Income Compensation Plans were by far in the Network Marketing Industry. But I was having a difficult time getting excited about what I saw and wasn't really interested in the nutritional industry as far as juices, lotions, potions, powders. I had been there, done that! So what company was going to be that "true fit"?

It was a great day the day I found my great sponsors, Kellene and Bill VanDorn online. A home based candle business? Could it be? I LOVE candles and was impressed with what I saw about their business and this company. I felt instantly connected with them. They seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing. Every aspect of this business was exciting to me and I wondered "Could this be it? The true fit business I've searched for?".

I got excited about the retail product which is a shift from what I saw in most network marketing opportunities. I saw a huge potential here plus a lot of personal enjoyment being a candle lover myself.

In April of 2005, I made the move that has shaped our lives from that point on. I joined our great candle company and it's been a wonderful journey ever since. I have always loved candles and the fact that this is a product everyone loves appealed to me. But in my evaluation of the company I also realized that our company offered me a real future, with substantial residual income potential and multiple ways to sell with retailing, fundraising and more! It was the company I'd looked for all those years!

Having a full time job and still that part time job, I went to work. I knew it wasn't going to "happen" for me overnight because I had a lot on my plate and not a lot of hours to work the business. I promised to give myself a year to get in profit or at least cover my monthly costs. I was burning the BEST candles in my opinion at 50% off so that was a winner (and a savings!). I took small steps in the beginning but slowly the track of my business took shape.

In January, 2006, I quit that part time job. In summer of 2006 I decided to put us under a little financial sacrifice and build my business instead of working that summer. Slow and steady wins the race as they say and although it's taken me time, those daily actions have paid off. As a result, I am now just about full time into my candle business and it's exciting!

The beauty of this business to me is there are so many ways to work it. There are many options available and something that will fit into just about anyone's lifestyle. I retail at craft shows, festivals, bazzars and this fall and winter I am actually going to start back doing a few home parties! I do candle fundraisers with groups and organizations looking to raise money and not only is that an additional income source for my business but very gratifying to do. I like to "give back" to my community and that is a great way to do so!

I also do a lot of work on the internet which is a good fit for my lifestyle as I can work online while my son is outside playing or asleep at night. People laugh when I say I can work at home in my PJ's...sometimes I do, or my sweats or shorts. My home office has a relaxed dress code and all I need is my computer and phone to be in business!
